So It Was is VolumeUp Studios' first big title. It is a top-down action
adventure game with randomized elements, unique combat mechanics and a
mysterious story (told by an even more mysterious narrator)
will unravel during multiple playthroughs. The game is designed to be
played through more than once, each run being unique and
revealing more about the game and its story to the player.
The development of And So It Was started somewhere around 2012, with Janne Markkula going about it alone and trying to search the internet for anyone willing to help. Janne wasn't (and still isn't) much of a programmer, so he started making the game the "wrong" way: by making the art first, with small bits of code here and there. Janne worked with a handful of programmers, who all expressed their will to contribute and help get the game finished. None of them did however. Pretty much out of other options, Janne then started to learn more and more programming to get the game to a playable stage.
Trevor Gast from working with him on a previous,
unreleased game project, and after some correspondence, Trevor expressed
his interest in continuing to work with Janne and producing the sounds
and music for the game.
